Mandaya A Day 3

past prefix = yanag/ya; example, nag-usap/nag-istorya/talked = yanagbalaw (talk = balaw)
present prefix = ya/ga; example, nag-uusap/naga-istorya/talks/talking = yabalaw/gabalaw
future prefix = mapag/mo; example, kakausapin/istoryahon/will talk = mabalaw/mapagbalaw

amazingly, Mandaya is like French. you eat the words with a constricted breath and a narrowed tongue gently touching the palette (roof of the mouth). the odd effort will silent most of the first syllables or letter/s of the word. yanagbalaw then is silently pronounced as yabalaw. mobalaw as mabalaw.

Mandaya A Day

today, i decided to learn my town's mother languageMandaya. honestly, there is a subtle indifference between most migrants and Mandaya families. i do not know the roots of this indifference but i often hear migrants associate Mandayas to voodoo practices. i do not care because i have many good Mandaya friends who were not into voodoos. i know they know people who practice voodoos, but they, so far, did not harm me.

Mandaya, as i know, is one of the Philippines' treasured cultural groups. i grew up with this people but i do not know much of their cultural  roots (some of themselves forgot theirs too). they are also wonderful people, especially their language. so, to start, i am learning their languageat least, one Mandaya word a day.

naunsa ka?/what happened to you?/anong nangyari sa yo? = yama uno kaw?
